Where love resides, hope abides

We have a team of devoted staff, most of whom have been with us for more than 15 years. We insist on a high staff-to-resident ratio so that our residents receive not only the care they require but also the love and attention they deserve as human beings.
Our staff know and love each of our residents individually and care for them like family.

What our staff say

“I have been working at Maison Shalom, the Carlton residence, for almost 34 years now! That alone speaks volumes. Not only do I consider working at Maison Shalom as the best job anyone can ask for, but it became my second family not just my workplace. We do what regular families do. We celebrate milestones, we comfort each other in times of crisis and take care of one another.

Going to work to see happy, smiling faces from the residents and my co-workers was the best part of my day. Although the physical work is challenging, there are always fun and very rewarding times as well. Going on outings to theater shows, cinemas, restaurants, museums, and parks doesn't feel like work but more of a family gathering to celebrate special moments. Creating special bonds with the parents, siblings, and other family members of the residents is something I appreciate tremendously.

Maison Shalom truly is a home built by love, compassion and caring. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else!”

“I began working at Maison Shalom when it opened in 1989. I worked there for 10 years with some of the same residents that live here today. I left to raise my children, but Maison Shalom has always stayed close to my heart.

When you walk in the door it doesn’t take long to notice how special this home is. It is filled with love, laughter, and the hustle and bustle of a busy home. Residents’ lives are filled with things you would find in any home, such as family dinners, bowling nights, karaoke, movies, birthday celebrations, and so much more. The residents are actively involved in their communities, taking part in Friendship Circle, Synagogue, and their educational programs.

A strong bond exists among the residents and with the dedicated staff, many of whom have worked here for years. I returned to Maison Shalom 4 years ago and truly feel back at home.”

What our volunteers say

“I have worked and volunteered in various places over the years, but none have taught me the value of unity, care, and respect like Maison Shalom. From my very first day, every member of the staff has been incredibly kind, taking time out of their schedules to ensure I feel comfortable. The residents are simply incredible people, surrounded by an abundance of love and care.

Every time I step into Maison Shalom, I intend to give my best, but I always leave feeling even more energized, happy, and refreshed. The environment is truly unique. Working with people with disabilities is a blessing, and getting to know their personalities, likes and dislikes, sense of humour, and most importantly, their loving hearts, has helped me grow and evolve personally.

Making the trip there every week is a priority for me, regardless of how busy my life gets, because Maison Shalom has become my family. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a special community.”

“I started volunteering during the Covid pandemic. I am the Shabbat guest; I visit outside in the yard while the residents are on the porch. It is such a joy to sing, say prayers, and share stories. It is amazing to see the energy and enthusiasm in the participants. It is such fun for me and life-changing.”

“Not only have I gained experience in learning how to create welcoming and engaging activities for the members of the group home, but more importantly I have also had the opportunity to get to know them individually. I have learned that just like any of us, the residents of Maison Shalom enjoy getting the chance to engage in social interactions with different people. I think that just a short conversation can make a world of difference in anyone’s day.”

“Being able to Zoom with the residents of Maison Shalom has been a highlight of this crazy year. There are very few things that we can do during lockdown, but I am thankful that this is one of them. Maintaining my relationships with each resident has been so special and rewarding.”

“Maison Shalom has a warm, caring, family atmosphere for its residents. I enjoy the privilege of visiting with the residents, singing, chatting, or reading stories, and having discussions about upcoming Jewish Holidays.”
